Type I Diabetes — Optimal Insulin Therapy™

“The safest place for a diabetic is as close to normalized blood sugar as possible. This program will give you the framework and confidence to achieve that success.”

Personal story: As I was laying in the emergency room with a 9.4% A1c, I felt like my life was over. The prospect of living out my days as a “pin cushion” and pumping incessant amounts of insulin into my body while hoping I would not make a mistake and have a hypoglycemic event resulting in death seemed daunting and hopeless. Over the next 4 years, I resolved myself to research every last protocol to effectively manage my blood sugar. And I don’t mean manage it 7% (ADA threshold for good control), I mean to as normal as possible (4.5% A1c). All new research clearly indicated that any incremental increase over normal carried with it the same incremental increase for all known diseases associated with diabetes. I was not going to allow this disease to take my quality or quantity of life. As a man of faith and as a husband/father who dearly loves his family, I embarked on a journey to not only save my life but to develop a framework that others could adopt and succeed at turning the tide on this debilitating disease. I did not like the idea or prospect of ever having to find myself on a surgical table awaiting a quadruple bypass, asking whether or not I did enough to stave off the myriad of diabetic complications. Let me give you hope… I am absolutely healthier and more fit than any other time in my life. I currently maintain a 4.8%-5.0% A1c without virtually zero hypoglycemic events (Over last 6 months I dropped to 55 mg/dl during a long hike). I do not wear a pump and enjoy a highly active lifestyle. I have every confidence in the world that I will live a longer, healthier life because of my diabetes.
Roughly 5-10% of all diabetics are Type I. Type I diabetes is characterized by a condition in which we produce “too little” insulin while Type II is characterized by producing “too much” insulin. While both forms of diabetes share many of the same symptoms, they are actually very different in how we manage the disease. The process by which Type II diabetes develops occurs over a long period of time and it is driven by diet and lifestyle. Whereas, Type I diabetes is typically a sudden onset phenomenon caused by an autoimmune response in the body where our immune system attacks the insulin producing beta cells in pancreas leaving us without the ability to produce insulin. As a Type I diabetic, it is imperative that you manage your diabetes to the highest degree for the following reasons: 1) high blood sugar is toxic to the body and will “rot” every tissue and organ in the body 2) Low blood sugar is exceptionally dangerous and can lead to coma and even death 3) Even though you do not produce any meaningful insulin, studies show that we still have viable beta cells. This is important because researchers, right now, are showing positive results in taking these viable beta cells and replicating them to begin to producing insulin again. Diabetics who still have beta cell function left may very well be carrying around their own cure –provided that they do not burn out remaining beta cells with high blood sugar. (Studies show that beta cells begin to die off when we spend any meaningful time above >140mg/dl for our blood sugar). All of your diligence today will lead to a healthier life and may even hold your cure for the future. Every incremental point above a normal A1c (4%-5%) carries with it an incremental increase in the risk of cardiovascular, neuropathy, retinopathy, erectile dysfunction and mortality. Many doctor will tell you 7% A1c is considered good control for a Type I diabetes. Make no mistake… this is a recipe for a slow, debilitating death. 85% of diabetics die of heart disease or stroke. Not managing your diabetes to close to normal as possible will certainly put you in that category.

Optimal Insulin Therapy™

Definition: A lifestyle and framework that reduces the blood sugar response in the body resulting in a decreasing demand for insulin, thereby, offsetting the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) events.
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is a leading cause of death is Type I diabetics
Layman terms: When we have a diet and lifestyle that causes our blood sugars to skyrocket then we must inject a corresponding level of insulin to bring those blood sugars back down. Large inputs of insulin are extremely dangerous and can result in coma or death. (Photo: Juvenile Diabetes Foundation— “1 in 20” Type I diabetics will die from low blood sugar) As a Type I diabetic you must walk a “tight wire rope” between maintaining low blood sugars and protecting against hypoglycemic events. Ignoring either side of this equation can have a detrimental outcome. In one of the most extensive Type I studies ever conducted, The Diabetes Control and Complication Trial (DCCT), it was shown that your lowering blood sugar levels you could dramatically lower the risk factors:
  • 75% reduction in retinopathy
  • 50% reduction of risk for kidney disease
  • 60% reduction of risk for nerve damage
  • 35% reduction of risk for cardio vascular risk
While these findings were dramatic, the treatment group in this study averaged 7.2% A1c with the conventional control group averaging 9.1% A1c. The well-known and distinguished Endocrinologist Dr. Richard Bernstein stated, “I believe that with truly normal blood sugars (4.5%-5.0% A1c), which many of my patients have, these reductions can be 100%.” As you work with our Diabetic Health Coaches and attend our Live Workshops you will learn:
  • Powerful, proven approach to optimizing insulin and blood sugar levels
  • Framework for achieving 5% A1c and reducing hypoglycemic events (Type I)
  • Meal planning and targeted blood sugar goals
  • Healthy food choices that result in lower insulin inputs/blood sugar while eating until satisfied (no calorie counting)
  • How to profoundly improve metabolism and health bio-markers
  • How to moderate insulin inputs, lower inflammation, promote efficient reduction of excess body fat, effortless maintenance of ideal body composition, increase daily energy levels, decrease risk for illness and optimize function of hormone systems (Stress, appetite, immune, metabolic, sleep and thyroid)
  • Sensible exercise that rejects long hours in the gym on the treadmill (counterproductive) but provides optimal outcome for lower insulin inputs, increasing insulin sensitivity, and enhancing body composition
  • How to cut through the “noise” of misguided/failed diabetic approaches
  • How to turn from the destruction of diabetes and create an optimal level of health and vitality
